Project 3 - Story Board

The workings of the machine -- a project that is meant to expand upon the concept of metaphor. A mill churns out what some could call 'life', but that which is created has little understand of their surroundings. Completely cut off from their scenes and produced in mass, it takesa great deal for these pour souls to break free of the reality which binds them. Thus why few ever do, and those which do are considered outcasts. Loney introverts who are given medication in order to once again return to the fold.

These are the foundations of a much larger concept.

Project 2 - Refit

The rift applies a constructive response to the feedback offered in the previous week. Though this idea is a recent transformation of the project, one created on an instant verge of inspiration -- the project illustrates the further expansion of the ideas into a far darker realm. No more text will be used to describe the pieces from this point on, and the image of the bound figure in burlap is somewhat shady.

However, an animatic was created seperately of the project in order to capture the idea in relative motion. Not fine tuned, and certainly far from capturing the complete essence of the emotion and feeling of the piece -- the animatic was married to the previous project in order to open the door to further projects. Again, this project still serves as an introduction in the projects which follow behind it. And now with an animatic already seperately complete, further descriptions of the idea shall develop as it evolves further.

In short, the artist's new direction is indeed to stretch the limits of visual metaphor.

Machine Artist Review

Mifes DF -- A Russian Based Artist who does a large selection of works. However, his mechanisms are quite organic in nature and have a very fluid form of motion. Below is an example of one of his sketches:

Mife's Mecha

The work here looks much like that of an insect, gathering depth in the object through shadows and light. In the line of works which inspire me, this would be the best example. There is form of hidden motion within the piece itself, and the dark, sketchy appearance only captured in this pre-rendered form offers a very dark and twisted appeal. This is the sort of style I wish to capture in my mechanisms.

Project 2 - Photo Montage

The beginning of a much larger work, the piece began to develope more into an introduction. The piece consists of sketches and paintings created by me, desaturated and inverted to somewhat blurr the details of the sketch pieces. It is not simply about the work, though it is a montage of artwork stacked one upon the other. It shows where the oirgins of the concept started -- in the creation of illustration characters which cross between human and animal.

Though this project doesn't practice the notion, the larger project that this will be amended to will drive towards unpacking more than just the illustration side of concept. The final goal, will be to try and capture the essence of the genre, the mindset, and the inspirations for loving such work in the first place without having to stop and explain ever fragment of it along the way. Using all the work done before as a starting point to draw upon, I can determine what was successful and what wasn't -- and attempt to make a piece that stands completely on its own without the artist to support it.

The Meaning of My Work

Originally, there was a conceptual desire to simply practice a unique technique of character design and creation which was considered “Furry”, or the creation of anthropomorphic characters that are a cross between the human and the animal. When not fully explored, the results are quite basic, a simple practice with character illustration. However, when the desire to cross this work into the digit media scene and put it to animation and conceptual creation the idea was pushed farther. Delving more into the mindset of the work, and attempting to break down the mentality of the genre and also the mere acknowledgment that a genre does indeed exist.

The dramatic lack of information of the subject drove the concept to turn more towards official descriptions, definitions, and documentary style productions which helped to explain and show the genre where it matters the most – the people. However, the documentary styles productions are an ever present evolution, growing and developing along with the artist. As they develop, there exists the desire to once again explore with the media and the idea of mixing the human and the animal. Not simply on the basis of sheer character design favoritism, but to explore possibilities of not only relaying ideas but to also try to capture the spirit of peace going beyond mere limits of illustration.

Digital media and animation allow for greater possibilities, transforming works into living, breathing representations not only of the artist, but also of the work itself. If done properly, the work can take on a mind of its own and develop new and interesting ideas. This was put to practice on a minor scale by using Flash media, by presenting characters in a familiar and lovable cartoon style in a story book setting. Yet the message that was told was far more deeper and adult than the characters themselves, yet they were necessary to capture the essence of 'there is more than what one may first assume' to the piece.

The goal of my future work would be to expand upon this idea, hoping to try and bring all the work I've done so far together, and turn into a more meaningful production that grows. A solid, single piece that consists of various parts that are in essence the projects I will be working out throughout the semester and beyond. I desire to the get meaning of the work across, without having stop and explain everything the user sees. In the end, when the projects conclude, I do not wish to have the viewer sharing my mind set, but I intend to bring them closer to it. Even if that means making them uncomfortable in the process.
